Oversized Freight Shipping: Expert Road Transport Solutions for Heavy Cargo

Oversized freight shipping is necessary when goods are non-standard or too large to fit in standard containers, requiring specialized transport solutions. This includes construction and special equipment, agricultural machinery, watercraft, and aircraft. Remember, the cargo varies in technical characteristics, weight, and dimensions.

As an oversized trucking company in Chattanooga, TN, we offer different transportation options. As the service is expensive, it is essential to know and carefully examine these options.

Flatbed trucks

Flatbed trucks are versatile and commonly used for the transportation of oversized freight. They have an open, flat platform without sides or a roof, making more room for your product(s). The flat surface in oversized heavy haul trucking suits large and bulky items.

Loading and unloading with flatbed trucks are easy as no height restrictions exist. The only concern is security, as the platform is open.

Step deck and drop deck trailers

There is a lower and higher deck in the step deck trailers.  Drop deck trailers are similar to step deck trailers but with a more pronounced drop.  Step deck trailers are suitable for taller loads but within the restricted height. You cannot exceed the recommended height. On the other hand, drop deck trailers are perfect for very tall loads with no height restrictions.

These trailers are suitable for tall items but have limited capacity compared to flatbreads.

Lowboy trailers

Lowboy trailers have two deck height drops: one directly after the gooseneck and the second before the wheels.  Because of their shallow deck, they can accommodate shipments like heavy equipment and machinery.

These trailers have a lower center of gravity, making them suitable for heavy and/or tall loads. However, they are limited to lower clearance heights and might require additional permits.

Extendable trailers

As the name suggests, extendable trailers can be extended or retracted to fit different cargo sizes. If the load is vast, the length can be extended, and for a not-so-wide load, it can be retracted. It’s easy to adjust the trailer length. The extendable trailers are versatile as they accommodate varying lengths. Most importantly, they effectively distribute the weight of the product.

Modular trailers

Also known as multi-axle trailers, these modular trailers are designed to handle a large amount of weight. These trailers are used for various purposes, including heavy-duty transport, construction, and agriculture. Across the main loading frame of the trailer, axles run. These axles, controlled by a computer, are placed side by side to form an axle line. The difference in these trailers is based on the number of axle lines. Modular trailers are highly flexible, as they can be configured to handle different sizes and weights of goods. However, they are expensive, as specialized handling and planning are required.
